Dissecting ALS Research articles, with Colin Franz, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Neurology, Shirley Ryan AbilityLabs and Northwestern University.
Current treatments for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) are lacking, but more are the horizon. Naturally we look to new ALS research studies for hope and solutions, but the information in scientific papers is often very hard to decipher. Dr. Colin Franz will teach you through a basic approach to reading scientific papers with specific examples taken from ALS clinical research. This talk is intended to provide the tools necessary for people living with ALS, their friends and family members to read scientific papers and increase their engagement with the ALS research community.
About the presenter: Dr. Colin Franz is the director of the regenerative neurorehabilitation laboratory as well as a neuromuscular medicine fellowship-trained physiatrist based out of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and Northwestern University. Dr. Franz has specialized expertise in neuromuscular medicine, rehabilitation, gene therapy, and disease modeling with induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Clinically, Dr. Franz sees patients with nerve injuries, neuromuscular diseases including ALS, as well as perform neurophysiology diagnostic tests (electromyography, nerve conduction studies).
The Franz lab uses a combination of molecular, bioengineering and electrophysiological testing to study neurotrauma, axon regeneration and motor neuron disease with a priority on human stem cell derived-neuron tissue culture and transplantation studies. The ultimate goal is to develop personalized rehabilitation medicine treatments to help his patients with neuromuscular disease. Dr. Franz is member of the Lois Insolia ALS Clinic, part of the Les Turner ALS Center at Northwestern Medicine.
